Chapter nineteen
I hadnât realized how late itâs gotten. Itâs dark outside, and so the house is pitch black. I use my phoneâs flashlight to guide us to the kitchen.
Charlie leans into the window, trying to see the neighborsâ² houses. âEveryone else has power.â
Dread swirls in my gut.
âIâll check the breakers.â He walks back towards our bedroom. The breakers are in a utility closet at the end of the hall. I follow him and go to our bedroom. Crouching into the closet, I open the gun safe and go back to the living room with the slick metal gripped in my hand.
I can hear Charlie flipping switches, but nothing happens. Movement from the front window catches my eye, and I walk closer to get a better look. I can see someone standing in the front yard, facing me. Itâs her. Without the downpour of rain, I can see better than I could the night of the storm. Long hair blows around her frame, but I still canât make out her facial features. I aim the gun forward, pointing it at the woman that is very clearly trying to fuck with me. I donât intend to shoot. Just to show her I am armed. I am not afraid. She extends her hand out in front of her. For a second, I think she has a gun too, and Iâm about to be shot. But I see her hand. No gun. It is held with her finger out and thumb up. Finger guns. And she motions her thumb as though sheâs fired a shot.
âCharlie!â My real gun trembles in my hand. Not from fear. Not exactly. I glance over my shoulder toward Charlie for only a second, and when I look back, she is running away. My instincts send me running out the front door, but I trip, noticing something on my doorstep at the last second and trying to step over it.
My hands extend before me, and I pull my knees up instinctively, trying to avoid landing on my stomach. My palms and knees smack the concrete and slide, peeling the flesh back as I go. I look down the road, still on my hands and knees to see the figure disappearing down the block.
âFuck!â I struggle up to my feet and, without thinking, wipe my palms on the sides of my shorts but wince when the exposed flesh scrapes against the denim and pieces of gravel that are embedded in my palms. I look back to the doorstep and see the object that sent me flying.
Something large, round, and flesh colored, but doused in what Iâm sure is blood. I move closer and cover my mouth as bile rises in my throat. Is thatâ¦? Itâs a pigâs head. Covered in blood.
Charlie stops short on his way out the door. He grimaces and crouches down to get a better look. âIs that a pig head?â
I nod and gag. I turn away from it.
âLike an actual pigâs head? What the fuck?â Charlieâs voice is both disgusted and astonished.
